My first glacier

The day started with a short bus trip, and a walk to the ice front. After a sweaty and slippery walk with our guides Frank and Håvard in front, something emerged in front of us. A dramatic structure filled with cracks and with a surreal blue color.
We had arrived to the front of Nigardsbreen.
First we got a crash course in glacier walking and then we could start our climb up the massive ice. On the way to the top we jumped over crevasses, looked down both big and small melt water holes, poked on dirt cones and listened to the pouring water. After a while we requested a photo stop and turned to look back down the glacier. The view over the ice front with its delta moraine in front and braided rivers on top, ending in the murky light blue glacier lake was astonishing. Further away was the Breheimsenteret pointing out the ice marginal anno 1748. All this in a beautiful U- shaped valley made of the very ice we were standing on. When continuing uphill deeper marginal crevasses were revealed, an avalanche came down the mountain side bringing rock fragments all the way down to the front, a nunatuk was threw the ice in the middle and we were able to see the top miles away. We stopped for a little chat and to breathe in the nature around us. The clouds cleared and we started our descent. The walk back to the bus felt like miles and more, so when finally arriving there a dip in the glacial lake was a fact, 2 degrees, but totally worth it.
